Works in Progress / Alpha Reads

Ok, beta readers, alpha readers, and those who just can’t wait for a finished product, here’s your chance to get in on the action early. Stories on these pages are definitely unfinished, often first drafts, and may be edited for (hopefully) improvement at any time. Also, you may well find serial works here, delivered chapter by chapter, or even scene by scene. Some of these may be planned in advance, and some might be developed, “pantser”-style, as I write them. No promises!

This is definitely your chance to help me improve my writing and my stories, if you are so inclined. Please do comment on these pieces and let me know what you think.

First up, my current work-in-progress, which started as a short story idea that came to me as I was drifting off to sleep. I’m not sure how many scenes will ultimately make up this story, and it is already turning out longer than simply “short” (at almost 12,000 words as of this writing, it’s well on its way toward becoming novel-length)*. Time (and perhaps you, dear reader) will tell. And yes, I have a vague idea of where this is going to go, but it could well go off the rails and in another direction entirely.

* Update: This formerly “short” story is now at 67,000 93,000 words and counting, and not done yet, so we’re definitely approaching novel length. But, I continue to deliver it to you in easy-to-consume chunks, averaging about 1500 words per scene, so do not be afraid to jump in and read just one scene at a time! Or, if you’re inclined to spend a couple hours on it, start at the beginning and read through in order. Each scene includes a link to the next to make it easy to navigate.

I’d like read but not sure what to click on. Don’t recall seeing other posts. I so glad you are writing,I knew it was in you. Are you really in Peru or is that part of your fiction. Peru can be pretty magical , I hear. ancient aliens still influencing….have fun.

    1. Hi Linda,

      Merry Christmas!

You can find each scene arranged in order, grouped in chapters, from the top menu, under “Works in Progress” then “The Silence of Ancient Light.” And at the end of each one is a link to the next, so you can just keep going straight through. I look forward to hearing what you think!

I was in Peru for a couple weeks in late September and early October, but I’m not there now. I’m still sorting out all the photos from that trip! Then I was in Barcelona for a week shortly after that. And then Hawaii for Thanksgiving, but that wasn’t quite so exotic. Peru was definitely magical, though I’m not sure that I found any aliens there. Other than myself, I suppose; technically, I was the alien.
